Got a caravan, or thinking of hiring one for a holiday? Staying connected can be a lot more challenging than in ordinary brick-and-mortar houses. And while disconnecting can be part of the charm, there are times when you really need WiFi – whether it’s to contact someone, stream your favourite show, or continue with work while on the road.
Don’t be put off, though. You can still have superfast broadband in your caravan or motorhome. Here’s how.
How do I get WiFi in my caravan?

Many caravan parks offer some kind of WiFi service, but this is not guaranteed, can be slow, and may not have enough bandwidth for your needs. Plus, you may end up in some remote locations on your trip, not only caravan sites!
If you want a guaranteed internet connection inside your caravan, that you won’t have to share with your neighbours, a few options are available – and they don’t all have to cost the earth. Here’s an overview of your options:
- Fixed Wireless Access Broadband
- 4G Broadband Portable Router
- Mobile Tethering/Mobile Hotspots
- Dongle
- Satellite Connection
Fixed Wireless Access Broadband
Fixed wireless broadband is the ideal way to get reliable broadband in a static caravan. You can achieve download speeds of up to 400Mbps and it’s a very reliable way to connect.
Fixed wireless works by connecting wirelessly to a radio tower not too far away from you using a small antenna on the outside of your caravan.
A line of sight to the transmission mast is needed to have a fixed wireless connection, though. In most cases, an engineer will come and survey if you are in range and can get you installed and online on the same day.
Static caravan broadband has the following pros and cons:
- Pros: Easy setup, superfast speeds, affordable, reliable.
- Cons: Can be affected by bad weather, and need line of sight to connect.
Airband can offer fixed wireless broadband to thousands of caravans in the areas we serve. Call us on 01905 676121 or fill in our online enquiry form if you want to find out more.
4G Broadband Portable Router
4G broadband connections work very similarly to how your phone connects to the internet, and can enable you to access the internet from either a static or mobile caravan.
How 4G broadband portable routers work
You pay for a sim card, which you put in your portable 4G router, and it creates a WiFi connection for multiple devices to connect to in your caravan.
4G broadband packages can be paid for just like your phone contract, as pay-as-you-go or pay monthly, which is handy if you don’t need it all the time.
You can also purchase an external antenna to put on the outside of your caravan, which will increase the signal strength and improve your speeds.
Before you sign up for a network, research which provider works best in your area. You can use the Ofcom coverage checker to find out what speeds are on offer.
Bear in mind that this is not a good option for you if there is generally a poor mobile signal in your caravan.
- Pros: No installation required, widely available, flexible payment options.
- Cons: Can be unreliable and won’t work if the mobile signal is poor.
Did you know: Some providers will charge an installation fee for fibre broadband – but we don’t. We offer broadband with no upfront costs.
Mobile Tethering/Mobile Hotspots
If you want an internet connection quickly and easily, you can tether to your mobile phone and use your mobile data to connect to the internet. This will work whether or not you’re on the move – so long as you have a signal.
How to tether a device to your mobile
To tether a device to your mobile, go to your phone’s settings and turn on ‘mobile hotspot’. You can then create a password and connect it to your other device’s WiFi settings, just like your normal router.
Tethering is usually the cheapest and easiest option to get internet in a caravan – in the short term – but long term it could end up costing you a lot by using up your monthly data allowance.
It also might not be a good solution if you have a poor mobile signal in your caravan or use the internet for data-heavy activities such as streaming Netflix.
- Pros: Quick and easy short-term solution, with no extra costs required to get online.
- Cons: Can become expensive quickly if you use all your data.
Dongle
Dongles are often used where traditional broadband connections are unavailable or inconvenient, like in caravans. This small, portable device plugs into a USB port on your laptop, tablet, or desktop computer to provide a WiFi signal via a mobile network. Essentially, it’s a plug-and-play solution for accessing the internet on the go. A dongle should work in all types of caravans, as long as you can connect to a mobile network.
A dongle operates using a SIM card, just like your smartphone. It connects to the mobile network (4G or 5G) and converts that signal into an internet connection for the device it’s plugged into.
- Pros: Portable, easy to use and pay-as-you-go or monthly data plans make it cost-effective.
- Cons: Speeds depend on network and location, plans have limited data, and they only connect the device they’re plugged into.
Satellite Connection
Satellite connections can keep you connected to the internet wherever you go, but there’s a catch…
…satellite internet can be very expensive due to the costly equipment needed to get set up and then large monthly costs, often multiple times more expensive than 4G or fixed wireless broadband.
Yes, you can achieve good internet speeds using satellite broadband, but it can be unreliable at times, and you might experience downtime and high latency.
- Pros: Good speeds in rural areas where mobile signal is weak.
- Cons: High latency, can be unreliable, expensive to set up and run.
How can I get faster WiFi in my caravan?
If you already have access to WiFi in your caravan, but you’re too far from the source to get a decent connection, a WiFi signal booster can help.
WiFi Signal Boosters
A WiFi signal booster can help whether you’re in a static caravan, or on the go. The boosters will either attach to the outside of your caravan or plug into a plug socket inside.
They connect to the WiFi and broadcast the signal, which extends it closer to you. A downside is that it may slow the overall speed of the connection down as it spreads it out more.
It is important to note that while the WiFi signal booster will improve the strength of the WiFi signal in your caravan, it will not make the actual internet connection itself any faster.
This means that if the issue is slow internet, or too many people connected to it at once, a booster will not make any difference.
- Pros: Cheapest option since you won’t have to pay for your own connection, quick solution to poor signal, will boost the WiFi signal to your caravan.
- Cons: Doesn’t improve actual internet speeds, won’t improve bandwidth, can reduce the overall speed of the connection, and won’t result in a reliable internet connection.
Overview of internet connections for a caravan
| Connection type | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed wireless | Good internet speeds where there is no mobile signal (up to 400Mbps downloads) Quick and easy setup | Needs line of sight to the mast Can be affected by the weather |
| WiFi signal boosters | Boosts existing WiFi signal No monthly cost | Won't improve internet speeds Can slow down connection overall |
| 4G broadband | Widely available Easy setup | Won't work without mobile signal Can be unreliable |
| Mobile tethering | Instant connection No immediate extra cost | Can use all your data quickly Won't work without mobile signal |
| Satelite broadband | Good speeds where there is no mobile signal | Expensive High latency and can be unreliable |

What is the cheapest way to get internet in a caravan?
The cheapest way to get internet in a caravan when on holiday is to tether to/use your phone as a mobile hotspot, use your monthly data allowance from your provider, or pay for a one-off mobile data packet.
However, this won’t be cheaper in the long run. An activity like streaming TV shows will eat through your data very quickly, and if you go over your limit, costly charges can be incurred.
So, if you have your own caravan, it’s definitely worth looking into getting a proper mobile broadband connection.
