Airband the broadband provider that connects country communities, has added a 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service to its growing portfolio of mixed-technology connectivity solutions. Four existing sites have been upgraded in Shropshire and Wrexham bringing hyperfast 1Gbps wireless broadband to over 11,000 properties with a further 30,000 to be enabled before the end of the year.

According to the latest Connected Nations report there are still 4.3 million homes without access to gigabit capable broadband. Airband is committed to supporting the digitally excluded with an ever-evolving range of broadband solutions that put the customer first in the areas that they serve.

Airband has been testing its hyperfast wireless service in Tenbury Wells, close to the brand’s Worcestershire base with Paul Birkin of The Crow pub in Tenbury Wells amongst those already benefiting, experiencing speeds of up to 2.3 Gbps during the testing phase. He said: “Broadband access is essential to us as a business and to our customer’s experience. But it’s been a challenge in the past as fibre is inaccessible to us. Now, we can offer our customers lightning-fast speeds which is great for business, although we are worried about pub quiz cheating!

Airband’s FWA offering has been revolutionising broadband accessibility by diversifying its service across Devon, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire over the last year. By embracing evolving millimetre wave (mmWave) solutions in the 60GHz band, Airband has now hit the 1Gbps milestone over a range of several kilometres.

Kash Rahman, Managing Director of Airband said: “This is a gamechanger for rural areas that haven’t previously had access to gigabit capable broadband. Residents no longer have to wait for fibre, thanks to our ever-evolving portfolio of services, we can now offer speeds of up to 1Gbps via wireless technologies for the first time ever.

As well as offering fibre where feasible, Airband also offers fixed wireless and 4G services – growing its ‘ready for service’ premises to half a million (175,000 via FTTP, 265,000 via FWA) since launching in the UK.
